Our Recruitment Process

Candidate Sourcing

Directions identify and attract potential candidates through a range of recruitment channels, including our existing candidate networks, online advertising, education and training providers, schools and community networks and events.

Application Screening

Applications are reviewed against the requirements of the position to identify candidates whose background, experience, qualifications and circumstances align with the role. Directions then develop a shortlist of candidates who are suitable to progress.

Job Interviews

Shortlisted candidates will participate in an interview conversation to assess their suitability, motivation, communication and understanding of the opportunity. This provides an early opportunity to identify any factors that may affect suitability.

Testing and Assessments

Candidates complete screen-in assessments to help evaluate areas such as literacy and numeracy, cognitive ability, safety aptitude or other role-specific capabilities. Assessments are considered alongside the candidate’s broader application and initial interview.

Reference Checks

Candidates who progress through the screening process participate in structured interviews aligned to role requirements. Reference checks are conducted to provide insight into a candidate’s previous workplace performance, behaviour and suitability.

Pre-Employment Checks

Directions verify documentation and requirements associated with each position. Depending on the role, this may include relevant licences, police clearances, safety requirements, Australian working rights, and medical assessments.

Building Long-term Success

Directions’ recruitment approach is designed to appropriately match the right candidate to the right host quickly, reliably and with minimal effort from employers, if required. The team combine broad sourcing channels with robust screening and assessment to identify candidates who are well matched to the role, workplace and industry requirements. For sectors such as construction, mining, manufacturing and defence, this can include consideration of workplace safety, licensing, training and medical requirements, with relevant checks completed before commencement. This allows Directions to spot potential poor‑fit placements early, giving host organisations candidates who are better aligned to their needs while placing apprentices in roles where they are more likely to thrive and stay engaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

It can be difficult to hire apprentices when they have little to no workforce experience.

Directions’ Screen-In Methodology is the team’s approach to looking beyond a candidate’s current experience and identifying their potential to succeed.

For apprentices and trainees, Directions understand that the right candidate may not have extensive industry experience, a perfect résumé or all the skills required on day one. Instead, the recruitment team looks closely at qualities such as attitude, reliability, motivation, willingness to learn and commitment to developing a career.

Directions also recognise that talented people can face barriers to employment. Rather than automatically screening candidates out because of their circumstances, the team aim to understand their individual situation and identify the support, training or pathway they may need to succeed.

This doesn’t mean lowering the standards expected by employers. It means taking a more holistic approach to recruitment and asking…

“Does this person have the potential to become a successful apprentice or trainee?”

By focusing on potential as well as current capability, the Screen-In Methodology helps employers access a broader pool of candidates while giving people who may have previously been overlooked an opportunity to build a career.

Directions can often provide suitable candidates within 24–48 hours of receiving your recruitment requirements.

As the host employer, you have the final say on which apprentice you choose to employ. That said, Directions can provide educated suggestions, but ultimately the choice is yours.

After recruitment and screening, it’s up to you. You can meet the candidates, ask your own questions, assess their fit with your team and workplace, and select the person you believe is right for the role. Directions’ role is to make the recruitment process faster, easier and more targeted. Directions provide the expertise and candidate pipeline, but you choose who joins your team.

Yes. Directions can help employers broaden their recruitment reach and connect with candidates from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. Our recruitment approach is designed to look beyond traditional talent pools. We work with a broad range of community organisations, employment services, training providers, schools, TAFEs and industry networks to identify people who may not otherwise come across your vacancy.

This can include Indigenous Australians, people with disability, neurodivergent candidates, women entering traditionally male-dominated industries, mature-age workers, young people and people from multi-cultural backgrounds. From more information, please contact the Directions team.

If we can’t immediately find a candidate who meets all of your requirements, Directions don’t simply send you unsuitable applicants to fill the vacancy.

The recruitment team will work with you to understand which requirements are essential and where there may be flexibility. Directions can then broaden thr search across candidate networks, community connections, training providers and other recruitment channels to identify additional potential candidates.

If there is still no suitable candidate available, we’ll keep you informed rather than wasting your time with poor matches. We can also discuss alternative recruitment approaches, including different candidate profiles, training pathways, recruitment campaigns or broader sourcing strategies.

Our priority is finding the right person for your workplace, and not simply filling a vacancy as quickly as possible.

Yes. We call this Flexible Re-Deployment.

We understand that not every placement works out perfectly, and there can be many reasons why an apprentice or trainee may no longer be the right fit for a particular host employer. Sometimes a new apprentice experiences culture shock when entering the workplace for the first time. In other cases, work may slow down, a project may finish, or the skills and expectations of the apprentice and host may simply not align.

When this happens, our focus is on finding a practical solution rather than allowing the placement to break down. Directions will work with you to understand what isn’t working and provide options for the next step.

This may include addressing issues within the existing placement before they arise, identifying a more suitable apprentice, or redeploying the apprentice to another host where their skills, interests and potential may be a better match.

Yes. Group Training Organisations and labour hire providers operate under different regulatory requirements, and the answer depends on the service being provided. Directions operates as a registered Group Training Organisation and also provides labour hire services. Where labour hire licensing requirements apply, Directions operates in accordance with those requirements.

A Group Training Organisation (GTO) employs apprentices and trainees and places them with host employers under a formal training arrangement. In Western Australia, registered GTOs must meet the relevant registration and regulatory requirements to operate as a GTO.

Labour hire providers in Western Australia are regulated separately under the Labour Hire Licensing Act 2020, which generally requires any business supplying workers to another organisation to hold a valid Labour Hire Licence. This licensing framework is intended to safeguard workers and ensure providers meet appropriate standards. In contrast, recruitment services in WA are governed by the Employment Agents Act 1976, and Directions is registered accordingly. Labour hire itself is not covered by the Employment Agents Act.
