About Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a structured, employment based program with a combination of on the job and off the job training.

Apprenticeships usually take three-four years to complete and traditionally cover skilled trade areas such as engineering and metal fabrication, automotive and mechanical, construction and building and electrical specialisations; as well as many others. They are usually at Certificate III level.

Upon successful completion, apprentices become a qualified tradesperson.

One of the differences between apprenticeships and traineeships is that apprenticeships often have stricter rules around how the indenture agreement (training contract) can be cancelled.

There aren't specific school levels or qualifications needed to start an apprenticeship, however employers can set their own requirements when hiring which could be a minimum Year of schooling completed or the prior completion of a pre-apprenticeship.
